Learning Objectives

  • Apply essential legal terminology derived from specific areas of law  ( eg contracts, IP, property, employment law)

  • Understand the vocabulary needed to compare and contrast the common law system with the civil/Napoleonic systems. 

  • Acquire vocabulary needed to understand written legal English;​

  • Identify correct prepositions commonly used within a legal English framework;

  • Demonstrate reading comprehension skills within a legal context;

  • Understand an awareness of legal register (lay v legal, formal v informal) style of written contracts;

  • Avoid typical mistakes common to non-native speakers;

  • Write accurately using specialized legal vocabulary with few usage errors.

  • Expand collocation/idiom usage in written legal and spoken legal English;

  • Apply modern letter writing skills and improve drafting and editing skills.

Course   Legal English + Internship

 

This course is designed for law students that want an intensive legal English course combined with an internship with local Dublin law firms. Participants will attend legal English classes in the mornings and then work with qualified lawyers on legal projects that consolidate the learning objectives in class. Learning Outcomes

Participants will;

  • Acquire the necessary legal vocabulary and terminology for their specific professional requirements; 

  • Develop the processes and strategies to improve legal English writing and drafting;

  • Understand with key vocabulary in texts regarding legal issues; Consolidate their language skills in the production of authentic legal content.

 

By the end of the course; Participants will feel more confident in using legal English independently in a professional setting. Participants are expected to be working towards autonomous language acquisition similar in standard to the TOLES curricula or B2-C1/C2  (Proficient User level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). 

 

 

Who should attend This course is suitable for law students at both undergraduate and graduate level who wish to improve and use their legal English by undertaking an internship in a Dublin law office. 

Fees    €1000 per week

Course fees include; initial skype consultation, all teaching and training materials, textbooks, internship allocation, social events, participant review report, certificate of participation.
